London and Malta, April 2012

This map shows Birgu (top) and Senglea (a.k.a. Isla) on the bottom. These two peninsulas were held by the Knights of St. John and by Maltese citizens during the Great Siege of 1565. There appears to be three sets of fortifications: the outermost are the Cottonera Lines, built 1723-1761. Within these are the Santa Margerita Lines, built ~1638. There is a third set of lines, one around the end of Senglea and the other across the neck of Birgu. The last stronghold of Birgu, at its tip, is Fort San Angelo and its counterpart on Senglea is Fort St. Michael.
