This relief model of the Hakone area in our hotel lobby shows that it is a former volcano, with a large caldera containing Lake Asti and several smaller, younder volcanic cones. Our hotel is on the left of the caldera. A traction railroad runs up from sea level to Gora in the caldera via 3 switchbacks.
