Street marker in Takaoka on 7 June 2013. I saw this while following our guide from the Daibutsu (Great Buddha) to the train station. The street appears in the novel Soryu no keifu (The lineage of Soryu, Novel) by Kigi Yasuko. It is set during the years from the end of the Tokugawa era through the Meiji era, telling the story of a physician of Dutch medicine in Takaoka and his family. Coming near the opening of the story is a depiction of the street Sakurababa-dori. In the past, it had been a horse-riding ground (baba) lined with cherry trees (sakura).
