We came across the Wakou Museum when we looked at a map of Yasugi while waiting ar the Yasugi train station for the bus to the Adachi Museum. It describes the tatara process for making steel, an old batch process used for centuries in Japan to make sword steel. The black lump is the steel left in the bottom of a tatara furnace after firing.
