Burning coal sitting on a grate under which air enters to keep the fire burning. The firebox is surrounded by water. Hundreds of staybolts connect the firebox to the boiler, supporting it and forming other means of transmitting heat to the water. The pressure in the boiler can be as high as 300 psi, so the staybolts keep the firebox from collapsing.
