Ice spikes were recommended for keeping your footing on ice both during land excursions and on the ship's decks in some weather. They were sold on board and in many groceries, drug stores, and other shops in towns. You had to bend over to stretch them over your boots, however, making them inconvenient to take off and put on whenever you visited a museum or shop.
