The yellow carriage, with revolving coal teeth at either end, moves in the direction into and out of the picture, ripping coal out of the ceiling. After making a pass, the white machine lowers slightly and moves to the right before going back up to hold the ceiling up. Tje whole apparatus thus enlarges a coal seam that is horizontal.
