In this snapshot, the sulphur ions enter the unit when the left donut is charged to 400 kV. The ions are inside the donut while the field has reversed polarity, so that when they emerges into gap #2 the field is again accelerating. The field oscillates as supercurrents flow back and forth between the toroidal drift tubes.
