When charged particles are accelerated sideways by a bending magnet they emit x-rays, and the pattern of this radiation is strongly directed forward, with the concentration increasing with their speed. The 7 GeV electrons of the APS produce a narrow beam of synchrotron radiation that is tangent to the ring. This is used by experimenters for diffraction and other measurements.
