Emperor Charles IV made Prague capital of the Holy Roman Empire and wanted a French Gothic cathedral. His first architect was Matthew of Arras, who built most of the chancel 1344-52. Charles' second architect was Peter Parler. He and his sons completed the chancel and started the south tower. Most of the nave was built 1872-1929.
