Maurice served in France with the Army Engineers during World War I.

From the history of UNICEF, Maurice worked for the "US Commission for Relief in Belgium during World War I, and had organized American Relief Administration efforts to feed more than a million children in Poland after the war." This group may have been European recipients of this aid.

From the history of UNICEF: "Maurice Pate (1894-1965) was UNICEF's first executive director from January 1947 until his death in January 1965, a few months before he was to retire." UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) was about one year old at the time of this photo.

Francis Joseph Spellman was Archbishop of New York 1939-67.

Jawaharial Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India 1947-64.

Trygve Lie was the first Secretary-General of the United Nations 1946-52. He was Maurice's immediate superior at the UN.

Dean Acheson was US Secretary of State 1949-53.

Dag Hammarskjold was second UN Secretary-General 1953-61.

U Thant was the third Secretary-General of the UN 1961-71.

Paul VI was Pope 1963-78.

Maurice built this house on the Bumps River in Centerville, Massachusetts for his first wife, Jadwiga Mankowska, a Pole. The Durbins and Pates made many summer visits here. Maurice had a row boat at the dock at the far right, which was reached via a staircase down a hill covered with poison ivy infested shrubbery.

The Beach Club was Mecca for the Durbin women.

This snapshot of Maurice in his rowboat with his two Welsh Corgis was cut down to roughly 2x2" to fit in a small silver frame that his mother kept on her desk. I inherited it from her, and now it's on my desk. This is how his family remember him, at Cape Cod.

Maurice's second wife, Martha Lucas (far left), had a home in Godstow, Connecticut where this photo was taken. They married in 1961, one year after Maurice's first wife Jadwiga died in Poland. Martha had been president of Sweet Briar College and Radcliffe College, and was on the board of the United Negro College Fund in New York City.

Maurice enlisted many celebrities in support of UNICEF.
