Maurice built this house on the Bumps River in Centerville, Massachusetts for his first wife, Jadwiga Mankowska, a Pole. The Durbins and Pates made many summer visits here. Maurice had a row boat at the dock at the far right, which was reached via a staircase down a hill covered with poison ivy infested shrubbery.

Ann Durbin and her brother Maurice Pate at the Beach Club. Maurice had to put wool in one of his ears and wear a waterproof bathing cap, since he had an ear injury that water made painful.

Maurice's second wife, Martha Lucas (far left), had a home in Godstow, Connecticut where this photo was taken. They married in 1961, one year after Maurice's first wife Jadwiga died in Poland. Martha had been president of Sweet Briar College and Radcliffe College, and was on the board of the United Negro College Fund in New York City.
